Trogdon carefully traces the book through the various stages of its composition and publication, paying particular attention to the changes made in galley proofs, the critical reception, and the book sales that, although healthy enough, disappointed Hemingway. Trogdon’s essay, based on archival materials and on the Hemingway-Perkins correspondence, expands upon and completes the work begun by Robert W.
Scribner’s first promotion efforts, aimed at booksellers, consisted of the salesman’s dummy and the description in the firm’s Fall 1932 catalogue. On 28 June, Perkins wired that the booksellers were responding favorably (PUL). The dust jacket illustration for the dummy was Roberto Domingo’s TOROS, which was retained for the jacket of the trade edition. Four photographs and the first four pages of chapter 1 were reproduced. The actual descriptions of the book’s contents were printed on the front and back flaps of the jacket.
